Just as people started gearing up for times reminiscent of a pre-pandemic world folks were stunned by the economic swing that has some holding on for dear life, literally, while others are watching for the uptick to take a leap into opportunities and increase their fortunes. We at Beck-Reit thought it would be helpful to compile some noteworthy East Austin news for our community of small businesses, owners, and investors. So, here’s what’s been happening in our neck of the woods!

Times are surely changing and there’s no place like Austin for retail. Driving across America, you may likely find some vacant retail strips or ghost towns with empty stores but definitely not in Austin! Austin is just the opposite of a typical US city, with a surprisingly lower retail vacancy since 2020. The capital of Texas now has the lowest retail vacancy rate for any city in the State of Texas and is also one of the lowest in the country.  Competition is fierce in major Retail Areas such as the Domain and other trendy shopping streets like South Congress, 2nd street Downtown, Burnet Rd, and East Austin. Properties command high rent and spaces have multiple businesses looking at each sight and competing with each other to be selected by the Landlord.

Beck-Reit recently represented the Landlord in an East Austin office listing. It was under contract within a week. The following tips detail how we made it happen.

In the last week of March, The East Austin Experts—Beck-Reit Commercial and others closed on 5 lots in East Austin to begin a killer surprise development project on E 7th Street.

The Mann Report publication wrote an inspiring article geared towards to importance of bringing owners into CRE. It’s no surprise that Beck-Reit’s own DeLea Becker was top of mind on this topic, as bringing more women into Commercial Real Estate is probably her favorite passion project.

The Texas Triangle Podcast had the honor of gaining insight from esteemed Dr. Lloyd Potter, Texas State demographer for their debut episode. Dr. Lloyd Potter was appointed State Demographer on June 4, 2010. Dr. Potter holds a Ph.D. in Demography and Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Public Health Degree from Emory University, a Master of Science in Education from the University of Houston at Clear Lake, and a Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University.

Once again, the Austin Area Heritage Council has organized the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration and activities. The Annual Community March is a celebration of Dr. King and his legacy while promoting the importance of multiculturalism and diversity within Austin. This year’s celebration includes the march, the community festival, and a food drive.

Bisnow hosted its very first Inaugural Women Leading Real Estate Awards featuring their inaugural class of Austin Trailblazers including Beck-Reit’s very own DeLea Becker. These accomplished women discussed everything from previous careers, recessions, and attempting to maintain a work-life balance.
